Worldwide enthusiasm for environmentally conscious, eco-friendly items has exploded over the last two decades. It has gone beyond paper, plastic and tin; high-end industries are now getting attention.
REKOOP collections, a line of bedding products fashioned after recycled materials – products such as sheets and pillowcases. The firm made its debut in 2018 at Home Fashions Week in New York, US.
REKOOP was birthed by GHCL Limited, an India-based textile company, to appeal to a market share of consumers seeking socially responsible home products that are comfortable, as well as functional. Market survey suggest that Millennial shoppers want to know the origins and environmental impact of the goods that they purchase.
“With all things being equal or even nearly equal, consumer preferences today will be skewed towards products that are eco-friendly and recyclable,” according to Manu Kapur, CEO of GHCL.
“Consumers will continue to support and buy products like REKOOP that are good for the environment with the understanding that the materials used to make those products are renewable, re-useable and recyclable,” he says.
The REKOOP collection consists of the most eco-friendly recycled PET fibre known as “Recron Green Gold,” manufactured by Reliance Industries Limited, an Indian conglomerate. The manufacturing process for REKOOP results in fewer greenhouse gases and a smaller carbon footprint than the most other production methods. Recycling the PET also reduces landfill dumping and reliance on crude oil.
The recycled material used in making REKOOP is source-verified due to the unique technology from Applied DNA Sciences in Stony Brook, a New York based firm. Stony Brook uses a platform known as CertainT to embed molecular tags in fibres, PET fibres in this occasion, in order for them to be traced all through the fabric manufacturing process.
“Many raw materials are similar in appearance, so it’s a big advantage to have your own molecular tag on your product and have it verified through forensic testing and tracking,” says MeiLin Wan, Vice-President, Applied DNA Science.
GHCL is one of India’s leading home textile manufacturers, and manages the entire manufacturing process for REKOOP, beginning with spinning the fibre to be used, followed by weaving, dyeing, and printing the finished duvets, sheets, pillowcases, and other items marked for exportation.
The company received the Golden Peacock Awards for Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance in 2017 and for National Quality in 2018. GHCL has also been recognized as India’s 67th “Great Place to Work” across sectors in 2018.
